Overview

Docetaxel micellar is a novel formulation of docetaxel, a semi-synthetic taxane and a widely used anti-cancer agent. Developed by Oasmia Pharmaceutical AB, this formulation utilizes N-(all-trans-retinoyl)-L-cysteic acid methyl ester sodium salt (XMeNa) as an excipient to form micelles, increasing docetaxel's aqueous solubility. This innovative approach aims to improve the safety profile compared to polysorbate 80-solved Docetaxel (Taxotere®) by eliminating the mandatory need for steroid administration pre and post infusion, thereby avoiding immunosuppressive and bone-damaging effects associated with chronic steroid use and reducing infusion reactions caused by polysorbate 80. Docetaxel micellar functions as a cytotoxic agent by stabilizing microtubules, which inhibits cell division and leads to apoptosis. It is being developed for various solid tumors, including metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.
