docosahexaenoic acid + aspirin is an investigational combination therapy being evaluated by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for the treatment of periodontitis. The regimen consists of 2,000 mg of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid, and 81 mg of aspirin. DHA serves as a precursor to specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), such as resolvins, which actively promote the resolution of inflammation. Aspirin enhances this process by acetylating COX-2, triggering the production of aspirin-triggered resolvins. In clinical pilot studies, this combination has demonstrated the ability to reduce periodontal pocket depth, gingival inflammation, and local inflammatory mediators in gingival crevicular fluid, suggesting a host-modulatory approach to managing periodontal disease.
