Overview

This combination of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is a specific omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid formulation being investigated for the prevention of cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. Developed in clinical contexts by the University Hospital of Toulouse, the intervention has been evaluated in major studies such as the Multidomain Alzheimer Preventive Trial (MAPT) and the LO-MAPT trial. The treatment aims to address cognitive deterioration in frail older adults and individuals with low omega-3 status or subjective memory complaints. Mechanistically, these fatty acids are essential components of neuronal membranes and are thought to exert neuroprotective effects by modulating neuroinflammation, reducing oxidative stress, and influencing amyloid-beta processing. In the LO-MAPT trial, the formulation is administered as a vegetarian softgel capsule containing a specific ratio of DHA and EPA.
