Docosahexaenoic acid-lysophosphatidylcholine (DHA-LPC) is a specialized lipid-based nutritional compound designed to efficiently deliver docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the brain. Unlike standard DHA supplements found in fish or krill oil, which are primarily in triacylglycerol or phospholipid forms and poorly cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), DHA-LPC is the specific substrate for the Mfsd2a (major facilitator superfamily domain-containing protein 2a) transporter. This transporter, located at the BBB, facilitates the uptake of lysophospholipids into the central nervous system. Preclinical research indicates that DHA-LPC can significantly increase brain DHA levels, potentially addressing neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, age-related cognitive decline, and depression. A stabilized analog, AceDoPC (1-acetyl,2-docosahexaenoyl-glycerophosphocholine), has also been developed to prevent the migration of the DHA acyl group from the sn-2 to the sn-1 position, ensuring targeted delivery and metabolic stability.
