Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Docusate sodium is a stool softener used to treat occasional constipation by increasing the amount of water the stool absorbs in the gut, making it softer and easier to pass. It acts as an anionic surfactant, reducing surface tension and allowing water and lipids to penetrate the stool, thus facilitating natural defecation. The onset of action is typically within 1 to 3 days when taken orally. Docusate's effectiveness in treating constipation is debated, with some studies suggesting it is no more effective than a placebo.
