Overview

Dolichos biflorus seed extract is derived from the seeds of *Dolichos biflorus* (commonly known as horse gram or Kulthi) and is used primarily in traditional medicine, especially in Ayurveda and folk remedies in India, for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties[1][2][4][7]. The extract contains phytochemicals such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, carbohydrates, proteins, and tannins[7][9]. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated that the extract has mild analgesic activity, significant diuretic action, anti-inflammatory effects (via inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, and reduction of oxidative stress), and notable antioxidant properties[1][2][4][7]. It is used traditionally for kidney stones (antinephrolithiatic), urinary disorders, joint pain, constipation, inflammation, bronchitis, and metabolic disorders[2][4][7]. Its antioxidant effects are attributed in part to polyphenols like quercetin, and it is also reported to influence lipid metabolism and blood glucose levels[2][7]. Some cosmetic preparations utilize Dolichos biflorus seed extract to support collagen production in the skin[3].
