Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dolutegravir is an antiretroviral medication used in combination with other drugs to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults and children at least 4 weeks old and weighing at least 3 kg. It belongs to the class of HIV integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs). Dolutegravir works by binding to the active site of HIV integrase and blocking the strand transfer step necessary for viral DNA integration into the host genome, thereby inhibiting viral replication. It is not a cure for HIV/AIDS but helps reduce viral load, increase immune cell counts, and lower the risk of developing AIDS or related illnesses. Dolutegravir has a high barrier to resistance and can be used both in treatment-naive patients and those switching regimens due to resistance or side effects[1][2][3][4][5][6].
