Overview

Domiodol is a small molecule mucolytic and expectorant that has been marketed in Italy under the brand name Mucolitico Maggioni. It is primarily used to treat respiratory conditions characterized by excessive or viscous mucus, such as chronic bronchitis and other lower respiratory tract infections. Domiodol acts by breaking down disulfide bonds in mucoproteins, thereby reducing the viscosity of mucus and facilitating its clearance from the airways. Additionally, it exhibits cilio-excitatory effects that enhance ciliary movement in the respiratory tract, further aiding mucus removal. Some studies also suggest antioxidant activity and minor modulation of thyroid function at high doses. The drug is typically administered orally at a dosage of 60 mg three to four times daily for adults[1][6][7][8]. Contraindications include severe renal or hepatic insufficiency[1].
