Overview
This is a combination therapy consisting of donepezil, a pharmaceutical acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, and Tianzhi granule, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formulation. Donepezil increases acetylcholine levels in the brain by inhibiting its breakdown, thereby improving cognitive function. Tianzhi granule contains multiple herbs (including Gastrodiae Rhizoma and Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis) and is used in China for vascular dementia; it is believed to exert neuroprotective effects through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antithrombotic actions and modulation of neurotrophic factors. The combination has been studied for symptomatic benefit in mild to moderate vascular dementia[1][5].
