Dong-A Atorvastatin

Dong-A Atorvastatin is a generic formulation of atorvastatin calcium, a small molecule HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor developed by the South Korean pharmaceutical company Dong-A ST Co., Ltd. As a member of the statin class, it works by competitively inhibiting the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, which catalyzes the rate-limiting step in hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis. This inhibition leads to a decrease in intracellular cholesterol concentrations, triggering an upregulation of LDL receptors on the surface of hepatocytes and resulting in increased clearance of LDL cholesterol from the circulation. It is primarily indicated for the management of hypercholesterolemia and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The product has been evaluated in bioequivalence studies against the reference brand Lipitor.
