Overview

Donor-derived red blood cell concentrates are a biological product prepared from blood salvaged from organ donors during the procurement process for liver transplantation. Developed by the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, this intervention utilizes a continuous-flow autotransfusion system (such as the CATSmart device) to recover and process donor blood, removing over 95% of heparin, potassium, free hemoglobin, and non-emulsifiable lipids. The resulting RBC units are produced to meet European quality standards for hemoglobin content and residual leukocyte levels. The primary indication is to support the transfusion requirements of liver transplant recipients intraoperatively, potentially reducing exposure to allogeneic blood products and utilizing the donor's own blood cells that would otherwise be discarded.
