Overview

Dopacell (also referred to as DopaCells) is an investigational cell therapy consisting of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived dopaminergic progenitor cells. Developed by the Royan Institute, it is intended for the treatment of moderately severe Parkinson's disease. The therapy involves the intraputaminal transplantation of dopamine-producing progenitor cells that have been differentiated from hESCs under GMP-compliant conditions. Once transplanted into the bilateral striatum, these cells are expected to mature into functional dopaminergic neurons, thereby replenishing the lost neuronal population and restoring dopamine levels to alleviate motor symptoms. The clinical evaluation is currently focused on safety, feasibility, and initial efficacy in Phase I trials.
