Dopamine is an endogenous catecholamine and phenethylamine that functions as a neurotransmitter and hormone in humans and other animals. It is synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine via L-DOPA as an intermediate. In the central nervous system, dopamine plays key roles in reward-motivated behavior, motor control, mood regulation, attention, learning, and hormonal modulation. It acts primarily by binding to dopamine receptors (D1–D5), which are G protein-coupled receptors distributed throughout the brain and peripheral tissues. Dopamine also serves as a precursor for norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and epinephrine (adrenaline). As a pharmaceutical agent (often administered as dopamine hydrochloride), it is used intravenously to treat certain conditions such as shock or severe hypotension due to its vasopressor effects[1][2][7].
