Dosidicus gigas hydrolysates are peptides derived from the enzymatic breakdown of proteins from the jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas). These hydrolysates are being investigated for their potential health benefits and are considered bioactive compounds. Research has shown that they possess antioxidant, antihypertensive, and potential anticancer properties in vitro. The antioxidant effects are attributed to the peptides' ability to scavenge free radicals. The antihypertensive activity is linked to the inhibition of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a key enzyme in blood pressure regulation. Some studies have also indicated that these hydrolysates can inhibit other enzymes like α-glucosidase, α-amylase, and lipase, suggesting potential benefits for managing conditions like diabetes and obesity. Furthermore, cytotoxic effects against certain cancer cell lines, such as human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) and glioma (U87), have been observed in laboratory settings. These hydrolysates are being explored as functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals.
