Double Lutein Blue

Double Lutein Blue is a sterile, non-toxic intraocular staining solution used as a surgical adjunct in vitreoretinal surgery, specifically for the visualization and peeling of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) and epiretinal membrane (ERM). Developed by Alfa Instruments and distributed globally by Bausch + Lomb, the formulation contains 2% soluble lutein, 0.05% Pure Benzyl-Brilliant Blue (PBB), and 0.15% trypan blue. The inclusion of lutein provides a dual benefit: it acts as a natural blue light filter and an antioxidant, protecting the retina from potential iatrogenic damage caused by the high-intensity light of the endoilluminator during surgery. PBB is a high-purity dye with a specific affinity for the ILM, while trypan blue stains the ERM, enabling surgeons to clearly distinguish and safely remove these delicate tissues. The product is CE-marked and intended to improve surgical precision while minimizing retinal toxicity.
