Overview

Doxacurium is a long-acting, nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used as an adjunct to general anesthesia to facilitate tracheal intubation and provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgical procedures. It is administered intravenously and acts by competitively binding to cholinergic receptors at the motor end-plate, thereby antagonizing acetylcholine and blocking neuromuscular transmission. This blockade can be reversed with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors such as neostigmine. Doxacurium is approximately 2.5–3 times more potent than pancuronium and 10–12 times more potent than metocurine. It has minimal cardiovascular effects and a low risk of histamine release, making it suitable for use in high-risk patient groups including those with renal or hepatic impairment[1][2][4][5].
