Overview

Doxazosin is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker in the quinazoline class. It is primarily used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hypertension. By blocking alpha-1 adrenergic receptors in vascular smooth muscle and the muscles of the bladder neck and prostate, doxazosin causes relaxation of these tissues. This leads to improved urine flow in BPH and reduced blood pressure in hypertension. Doxazosin is administered orally and is available as both immediate-release and extended-release formulations. It was patented in 1977 and introduced for medical use in 1988[1][2][4][5][7].
