Doxercalciferol is a synthetic vitamin D2 analog used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), both those on dialysis and those with stage 3 or 4 CKD not yet on dialysis. It is metabolized in the liver to its active form, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D2, which acts as a biologically active form of vitamin D2. The drug works by binding to the vitamin D receptor and suppressing parathyroid hormone (PTH) synthesis and secretion. This helps regulate calcium and phosphate metabolism by increasing intestinal absorption of calcium, reducing PTH levels, and preventing bone disorders associated with CKD[1][2][3][6].
