Overview
Doxopeg is a pegylated liposomal formulation of doxorubicin hydrochloride developed by BSV (Bharat Serums and Vaccines). It is an anthracycline antineoplastic agent that functions by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting the enzyme DNA topoisomerase II, which is essential for DNA replication and cell division. The pegylated liposomal delivery system significantly alters the drug's pharmacokinetics, providing a prolonged circulation time and allowing for preferential accumulation in tumor tissues through the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. This formulation is specifically designed to minimize systemic toxicities, particularly cardiotoxicity and alopecia, which are common with conventional doxorubicin. It is approved for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, advanced ovarian cancer, and AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma.
