Doxorubicin hydrochloride micelles is an investigational nanoparticle formulation of the anthracycline chemotherapy agent doxorubicin, developed by Kairuilong (Beijing) Pharmaceutical in collaboration with the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The drug utilizes a micellar delivery system designed to encapsulate doxorubicin hydrochloride, which aims to improve the pharmacokinetic profile and biodistribution of the drug. By leveraging the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, the micellar formulation is intended to increase drug accumulation within tumor tissues while minimizing exposure to healthy tissues, thereby reducing systemic toxicities such as cardiotoxicity and myelosuppression. The active moiety, doxorubicin, exerts its antineoplastic effect by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, which prevents DNA replication and induces apoptosis. It is currently in Phase I clinical development in China for the treatment of advanced solid tumors.
