Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Doxorubicin liposomal non-pegylated (commonly marketed under the brand name Myocet) is a non-pegylated liposomal formulation of the anthracycline chemotherapy agent doxorubicin hydrochloride. It is designed to optimize the therapeutic index of doxorubicin by encapsulating the drug within liposomes, which alters its pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution. This formulation significantly reduces the risk of cumulative, dose-dependent cardiotoxicity (such as congestive heart failure) compared to conventional doxorubicin, while maintaining comparable antitumor efficacy. It is approved in Europe and Canada, in combination with cyclophosphamide, for the first-line treatment of metastatic breast cancer in adult women. The asset was originally developed by The Liposome Company (later acquired by Elan), with subsequent development and commercialization rights held by Cephalon, Teva, and more recently acquired by Cheplapharm in Europe, with Mediolanum Farmaceutici (via its subsidiary Istituto Gentili) handling commercialization in Italy.
