Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections caused by both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It is also indicated for the treatment or prevention of anthrax (including inhalational anthrax), plague and tularemia (potential bioterrorism agents), rickettsial infections (such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and typhus), sexually transmitted infections (including chlamydia and gonorrhea), respiratory tract infections (such as those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae), urinary tract infections due to susceptible bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species; ophthalmic infections; acne; rosacea; gum disease; malaria prophylaxis; and certain rare or resistant bacterial diseases. Mechanistically it works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria through binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This action prevents the addition of amino acids to growing peptide chains during translation. Doxycycline also exhibits anti-inflammatory effects that contribute to its efficacy in conditions like acne and rosacea. It is available in several salt forms including doxycycline hyclate and monohydrate. Dosage forms include tablets (immediate- or delayed-release), capsules (immediate- or extended-release), oral suspension/powder for suspension/syrup/gel/injection. Developed by Pfizer.
