Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Doxycycline (20%) encapsulated in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres is an investigational local drug delivery system developed by the University of Campinas for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. In this specific formulation, the antibiotic is loaded into biodegradable PLGA microspheres for subgingival delivery, providing sustained release as an adjunct to ultrasonic periodontal debridement. This approach targets periodontal pathogens such as *Porphyromonas gingivalis* and *Fusobacterium nucleatum* directly within the periodontal pocket to reduce inflammation and pocket depth.
