doxycycline carragenate

Doxycycline carragenate is a pharmaceutical formulation that combines the antibiotic doxycycline with carrageenan (a sulfated polysaccharide derived from red seaweed). This combination was developed to overcome issues of reduced doxycycline absorption and plasma concentration at high gastric pH—such as may occur in patients on proton pump inhibitors or with achlorhydria. Carrageenan improves the reliability of doxycycline absorption by acting as a gel-forming agent, modulating release, and potentially providing additional bioactive effects, including mucoadhesion, antiviral and antibacterial activity. Doxycycline, a tetracycline-class antibiotic, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Carrageenan, often serving as an excipient in drug delivery, may also offer supplementary antiviral and immunomodulatory effects in the formulation[1][2][3]. Primary indication is for infections responsive to doxycycline.
