Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a locally delivered antimicrobial formulation consisting of 20% doxycycline encapsulated within biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres. Developed by researchers at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil, it is specifically designed for the treatment of chronic periodontitis as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy (ultrasonic debridement). The formulation is applied directly into periodontal pockets, where the PLGA matrix provides a controlled, sustained release of the antibiotic for up to 21 days. This targeted delivery maintains therapeutic concentrations of doxycycline at the site of infection, effectively targeting subgingival bacterial biofilms and pathogens such as *Porphyromonas gingivalis*.
