DPP4-Fc is a recombinant fusion protein (immunoadhesin) developed by Planet Biotechnology for the treatment and prevention of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus infection. The drug consists of the extracellular domain of the human dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) receptor—the primary entry point for MERS-CoV—fused to an immunoglobulin Fc region. Produced using Planet Biotechnology's proprietary plant-based expression platform, DPP4-Fc acts as a decoy receptor. By binding to the spike protein of MERS-CoV, it prevents the virus from interacting with endogenous DPP4 receptors on host cells, thereby neutralizing the virus and blocking viral entry. The project received a Phase II SBIR grant from the NIH in 2015 and is currently in preclinical development.
