Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**DR-1021** was an investigational, low-dose combined oral contraceptive developed by Duramed. Its 28-day regimen comprised 21 daily tablets containing **desogestrel 150 micrograms plus ethinyl estradiol 20 micrograms**, followed by 7 daily tablets containing **ethinyl estradiol 10 micrograms**. Desogestrel is a progestin prodrug whose active metabolite suppresses ovulation through progesterone-receptor activity, while ethinyl estradiol provides estrogen-receptor activity and contributes to inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. DR-1021 was evaluated in completed Phase 3 contraception studies but no distinct marketed brand name for this exact 21/7-active regimen was confirmed.
