Overview

Dried Leaf Artemisia (DLA) is an experimental antimalarial therapy consisting of pulverized and tableted dried leaves of the *Artemisia annua* plant. Developed by researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), DLA is designed as a whole-plant alternative to purified artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). The therapeutic rationale for DLA is based on the synergistic interaction between artemisinin and other phytochemicals present in the leaf, such as flavonoids and additional terpenes, which may enhance artemisinin bioavailability and slow the development of drug resistance in *Plasmodium* parasites. Clinical trials, including Phase 2 studies in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have evaluated DLA for its efficacy in clearing both the asexual stages and the transmission stages (gametocytes) of malaria.
