Overview

Dried plasma is a shelf-stable, lyophilized or spray-dried formulation of blood plasma, used for rapid reconstitution and transfusion in situations where fresh frozen plasma is unavailable. It contains coagulation factors and plasma proteins essential for hemostasis and volume expansion, and is primarily indicated for resuscitation in trauma and hemorrhagic shock, especially in prehospital, battlefield, military, and remote settings. Dried plasma is made by either freeze-drying (lyophilization) or spray-drying plasma, allowing it to be stored at room temperature for up to two years and rapidly reconstituted with sterile water at the point of care. Modern products are pathogen-reduced to mitigate prior risks of disease transmission. It can be used as a universal plasma product (especially AB type). Currently, dried plasma products are not FDA-approved for civilian use in the US but are available under emergency use authorization for military use. Several products, such as FrontlineODP, are under clinical investigation.
