Overview
DRL_AB is a biosimilar candidate of abatacept (Orencia), developed by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories. It is a recombinant fusion protein consisting of the extracellular domain of human cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) linked to a modified Fc portion of human immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1). DRL_AB functions as a selective T-cell costimulation modulator by binding to CD80 and CD86 on antigen-presenting cells, thereby blocking the interaction with CD28 on T-cells. This inhibition prevents the costimulatory signal required for full T-cell activation, which is a key driver in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. The drug is currently in Phase III clinical trials for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, where it is being compared to the reference product for efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity.
