Overview

Drometrizole trisiloxane is a synthetic, lipophilic benzotriazole derivative used as a broad-spectrum ultraviolet (UV) filter in sunscreen products. It absorbs both UVA and UVB radiation, with absorption peaks at 303 nm and 344 nm, providing protection against sun-induced skin damage. The compound is highly photostable and does not degrade significantly under sunlight exposure. Its mechanism of action involves absorbing high-energy UV rays and converting them into less harmful energy forms such as heat, thereby reducing the risk of skin aging and nonmelanoma carcinoma associated with UV exposure. Drometrizole trisiloxane is marketed primarily under the brand name Mexoryl XL by L'Oreal and is approved for use in sunscreens in regions including the EU, Canada, Australia, and Japan; it has not been approved for over-the-counter use in the United States[1][2][6][8].
