Overview

Dronabinol MDI is an inhaled formulation of synthetic delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) developed by Solvay Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with Nektar Therapeutics. It was designed for the acute treatment of moderate to severe migraine headaches. By utilizing a pressurized metered dose inhaler, the drug aims to provide rapid systemic absorption and a faster onset of action compared to oral dronabinol (Marinol), bypassing first-pass liver metabolism. Dronabinol acts as an agonist at the cannabinoid CB1 receptors in the brain. The program reached Phase 2 clinical development (NCT00123201) but was ultimately discontinued following the acquisition of Solvay Pharmaceuticals by Abbott.
