Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Drosfemine is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing the synthetic estrogen ethinylestradiol and the progestin drospirenone. Developed by Mibe Arzneimittel, it is primarily indicated for the prevention of pregnancy (birth control) and may also be used to manage moderate acne vulgaris and symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Ethinylestradiol acts as an estrogen receptor agonist, while drospirenone acts as a progesterone receptor agonist to inhibit ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and alter the endometrium to prevent implantation. Additionally, drospirenone exhibits antimineralocorticoid and antiandrogenic properties, which help reduce water retention and acne.
