Overview

DS-1093a is an orally active small molecule inhibitor of hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PHD). By inhibiting HIF-PHD, DS-1093a prevents the degradation of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), leading to their accumulation and activation. This results in increased expression of genes involved in erythropoiesis, such as erythropoietin (EPO), which stimulates red blood cell production. The drug has been developed primarily for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Preclinical studies demonstrated that continuous administration of DS-1093a increases hemoglobin levels in animal models. It is being developed by Daiichi Sankyo and has undergone Phase 1 clinical trials in healthy volunteers and patients with CKD.
