Overview

DS-5670a + DS-5670b is a bivalent mRNA-based vaccine developed by Daiichi Sankyo for the prevention of COVID-19, specifically designed for use as a booster dose. Unlike other prominent mRNA vaccines that utilize the full-length spike protein, this vaccine platform focuses on the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein, which is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies. The bivalent formulation consists of two mRNA components: DS-5670a, which targets the original (ancestral) SARS-CoV-2 strain, and DS-5670b, which targets the Omicron BA.4/5 variants. The mRNA is encapsulated in a proprietary lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery system developed by Daiichi Sankyo. In November 2023, it became the first domestically developed mRNA vaccine to receive approval in Japan for use as a booster, following the earlier approval of the monovalent version.
