Overview

DS-5670b is a monovalent mRNA vaccine developed by Daiichi Sankyo that specifically targets the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of SARS-CoV-2. It utilizes a proprietary lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery system to transport mRNA encoding the viral spike protein into host cells. Once inside, the mRNA is translated into the spike protein, which serves as an antigen to stimulate a protective immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cell activation. Approved in Japan in November 2023, it was the first domestically developed mRNA vaccine in Japan to be authorized for use as a booster against the Omicron variant. The vaccine was developed as part of a Japanese government-supported initiative to establish domestic vaccine manufacturing and supply capabilities.
