Overview

DS-7250 is an orally active, small molecule agonist of the G protein-coupled receptor 119 (GPR119), developed by Daiichi Sankyo for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. GPR119 is primarily expressed in pancreatic beta cells and intestinal enteroendocrine cells (L-cells). Activation of this receptor by DS-7250 stimulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion and promotes the release of incretin hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), thereby improving glycemic control. This dual mechanism of action aims to lower blood glucose levels while minimizing the risk of hypoglycemia. Although the drug candidate reached Phase 2 clinical trials, its development was ultimately discontinued by the sponsor.
