Overview

DS-7309 is an orally administered small molecule drug developed by Daiichi Sankyo as a glucokinase activator for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glucokinase activators work by stimulating glucokinase, an enzyme that plays a key role in glucose metabolism in pancreatic beta cells and the liver, thereby enhancing glucose utilization and lowering blood sugar levels. Clinical development included phase I trials to assess safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics in both healthy volunteers and subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Development for this indication was discontinued after phase I[1][2][4].
