DS-7830a is a small molecule agonist of the trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1), currently in Phase 2 clinical development by Daiichi Sankyo for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). TAAR1 is a G protein-coupled receptor that regulates the activity of dopaminergic, serotonergic, and glutamatergic neurons in the central nervous system. By activating TAAR1, DS-7830a modulates monoamine neurotransmission, offering a novel therapeutic approach distinct from traditional selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). The drug is administered orally and is being investigated for its potential to improve depressive symptoms with a potentially favorable side-effect profile compared to existing therapies.
