Overview

DSB-39 is a novel C-ring modified prodigiosene derivative synthesized for potential use as an anti-leukemia agent. Developed by researchers at Dalhousie University and the IWK Health Centre, it is a synthetic analog of the naturally occurring compound prodigiosin. DSB-39 has demonstrated potent in vitro activity against various leukemia cell lines, including K562 (chronic myelogenous leukemia), CCRF-CEM, and MOLT-4. In zebrafish xenograft models, DSB-39 exhibited strong cytotoxicity against human K562 leukemia cells, showing efficacy comparable to or greater than the BCR-ABL1 inhibitor imatinib mesylate. Its development aims to provide a therapeutic option with improved anti-cancer potency and reduced systemic toxicity compared to natural prodigiosin.
