DSP-0551 is an investigational small molecule T-type calcium channel inhibitor being developed by Sumitomo Pharma for the treatment of Parkinson's disease tremor. T-type calcium channels (Cav3) are low-voltage-activated channels that play a critical role in regulating neuronal firing patterns; their overactivity in the thalamocortical circuitry is implicated in the pathophysiology of various tremors. DSP-0551 is designed to provide a more targeted therapeutic effect for tremor symptoms compared to broader-acting agents like zonisamide. It has undergone Phase 1 clinical evaluation in Japan, including studies in healthy adult and elderly volunteers to assess safety, pharmacokinetics, and its effects on electroencephalogram (EEG) activity.
