Drug intelligence / Profile preview
DSP-7238 is a novel, potent, and highly selective small molecule inhibitor of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) that was developed by Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma (now Sumitomo Pharma) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of DPP-4, preventing the enzymatic degradation of incretin hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). This inhibition leads to increased active incretin levels, which enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion and improves glycemic control. DSP-7238 is characterized by its high selectivity for DPP-4 over related enzymes like DPP8, DPP9, DPP II, and fibroblast activation protein alpha (FAPalpha), potentially reducing the risk of adverse effects associated with off-target inhibition. Clinical development of DSP-7238 was discontinued after Phase I trials.
