Overview

The DTP-Hib vaccine, often referred to as the 'tetravalent vaccine' in Brazil, is a combined biological product developed by Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz in collaboration with Instituto Butantan. It is a quadrivalent vaccine designed to provide active immunity against four major bacterial pathogens: diphtheria (*Corynebacterium diphtheriae*), tetanus (*Clostridium tetani*), pertussis (*Bordetella pertussis*), and *Haemophilus influenzae* type b (Hib). The formulation consists of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, inactivated whole-cell pertussis, and a conjugated Hib polysaccharide (PRP-T). Primarily used within the Brazilian National Immunization Program, the vaccine is indicated for infants starting at two months of age to prevent diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, and severe Hib-related conditions such as meningitis and pneumonia. By 2007, the production technology was fully nationalized in Brazil following a technology transfer from GSK Biologicals.
