Overview
The DTP vaccine is a combination prophylactic vaccine developed and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, a member of the Cyrus Poonawalla Group. Introduced in 1974 and WHO-prequalified since 1995, it is designed to protect children against three major bacterial diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough). The vaccine contains diphtheria and tetanus toxoids along with inactivated whole-cell Bordetella pertussis bacteria, adsorbed onto aluminum salts to enhance the immune response. It works by eliciting the production of neutralizing antibodies against the diphtheria and tetanus toxins and stimulating cellular and humoral immunity against pertussis antigens. It is a cornerstone of global pediatric immunization programs, supplied extensively to agencies like UNICEF and PAHO.
