Overview

DTR-001 is an investigational topical cream being developed by Cipher Pharmaceuticals for the removal of tattoos. Originally developed at Dalhousie University, the technology utilizes a "Bisphosphonate Liposomal Tattoo Removal" (BLTR) approach. It works by delivering bisphosphonates via liposomes to target and deplete macrophages—the white blood cells responsible for trapping tattoo pigment in the skin. When these macrophages are destroyed via bisphosphonate-induced apoptosis, the released pigment is engulfed by new macrophages and subsequently transported to the lymph nodes for disposal, effectively fading the tattoo. As of the latest reports, the candidate remains in the preclinical stage of development and is intended to be a prescription medication available through dermatologists.
