Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Duac (clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide) is a topical combination gel developed by Stiefel Laboratories, a subsidiary of GSK, for the treatment of inflammatory acne vulgaris. It contains clindamycin phosphate, a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, and benzoyl peroxide, a potent oxidizing agent with bactericidal properties. The combination is designed to target *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*), the primary bacterium involved in acne pathogenesis. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the combination therapy is more effective than either component used as monotherapy in reducing both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions.
