Overview
Dual nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a smoking cessation strategy that combines a long-acting nicotine delivery system, typically a transdermal patch, with a short-acting, as-needed nicotine product such as gum, lozenge, inhaler, or nasal spray. This approach is designed to provide a steady baseline level of nicotine to reduce withdrawal symptoms while allowing the user to manage acute cravings with the short-acting component. Clinical evidence suggests that dual NRT is more effective than using a single form of NRT alone. In the context of the Massachusetts General Hospital study, it is being evaluated alongside peer recovery coaching for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and tobacco use disorder (TUD).
