Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The Dual Prevention Pill (DPP) is a novel, single, co-formulated daily oral medication designed to prevent both HIV infection and unintended pregnancy. It combines two established pharmaceutical components: oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and combined oral contraception (COC). The first-generation DPP, developed by Viatris, integrates Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate and Emtricitabine for HIV prevention, and Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol for contraception. This multi-purpose prevention technology aims to address critical public health needs, particularly in regions with high rates of HIV incidence among women of reproductive age and unmet family planning needs. It is administered as a daily oral pill, typically following a 21-7 regimen where 21 tablets contain both antiretroviral and contraceptive agents, and 7 tablets contain only the antiretroviral agents to maintain HIV protection during the contraceptive-free interval.
