Overview

Duloxetine is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) used primarily to treat major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, diabetic peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain caused by diabetes), fibromyalgia, chronic musculoskeletal pain (such as low back pain and osteoarthritis), and stress urinary incontinence. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system, thereby increasing their levels. This dual action helps regulate mood and reduce pain perception. Duloxetine also increases dopamine levels specifically in the prefrontal cortex via inhibition of norepinephrine transporters but does not directly inhibit dopamine transporters. The drug was originally developed by Eli Lilly[4][5][6].
