Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Duloxetine Boehringer Ingelheim is a small molecule serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) indicated for the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP) in adults. It works by potentiation of serotonergic and noradrenergic activity in the central nervous system through the inhibition of the serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) transporters. This mechanism modulates descending inhibitory pain pathways, providing analgesic effects in neuropathic conditions. Originally developed by Eli Lilly and marketed as Cymbalta, this specific formulation was authorized for marketing by Boehringer Ingelheim in the European Union in 2008. It is typically administered orally at doses of 60 mg to 120 mg daily, often in gastro-resistant capsule form to prevent degradation in the stomach.
